What this does
Decodes the PNG and writes it again as a JPG at the quality you choose. Several PNGs are converted one after another and offered together as a ZIP. The result carries no metadata, so a screenshot converted here says nothing about the computer it was taken on.
What it can’t do
Keep transparency or an animation. Transparent pixels become white, and an animated PNG gives its first frame.
A worked example
A job site rejects a 4 MB PNG headshot because the limit is 1 MB. Converted to JPG at quality 85, the same picture is 310 KB and looks identical on screen.
Questions
- Why is the JPG so much smaller?
- PNG stores every pixel exactly. JPG throws away detail the eye does not notice, which cuts a screenshot or photo to a fraction of the size. For a photo the difference is invisible at quality 80 or above.
- What happens to transparent areas?
- JPG has no transparency, so transparent parts are filled with white. If you need the transparency, keep the PNG or convert to WebP instead.
- Will text and sharp edges stay crisp?
- Mostly. At low quality settings, JPG smudges the edges of text and flat colours. For a screenshot with a lot of text, use quality 90 or keep it as PNG.
Your file stays on this device
The tool above runs in a sealed frame that cannot send your file anywhere. It works with airplane mode on, and the counter above it stays at 0. Here is how you can check that yourself.
