What this does
Decodes the JPG, applies its rotation so the picture is upright, and writes it as a PNG. The camera, date and location details stored in the JPG are left out.
What it can’t do
Reduce the file size. For a smaller file, compress the image or convert it to WebP instead.
A worked example
A print shop’s upload form only takes PNG files. A phone photo saved as JPG is converted here, comes out as a PNG with no location data in it, and is accepted.
Questions
- Does converting to PNG improve the quality?
- No. Whatever the JPG lost when it was saved stays lost. PNG only promises that nothing more is lost from here on.
- Why is the PNG bigger than the JPG?
- PNG stores every pixel exactly, which takes more room than JPG's approximation. A photo can grow five to ten times. That is normal.
- Can I make the background transparent?
- Not with this tool. It keeps the picture as it is; you would need an image editor to cut out a background.
