WebP to PNG

Turn a WebP picture into a PNG that every program opens.

What this does

Decodes the WebP and writes it as a PNG. Nothing is lost on the way, and the metadata the WebP carried is left out.

What it can’t do

Keep an animation, or make the picture any sharper than the WebP already is. A heavily compressed WebP stays heavily compressed inside the PNG; it just takes more room.

A worked example

A product photo saved from a shop’s website is a WebP that an older photo editor refuses to open. Converted here, it opens as a PNG with the same picture.

Questions

Why did I get a WebP file in the first place?
Many websites serve pictures as WebP because the files are small. Right-click, save picture gives you the WebP, which older programs and some upload forms do not accept.
Is transparency kept?
Yes. PNG supports transparency, so a logo with a see-through background stays that way.
What about an animated WebP?
You get the first frame only. PNG does not hold the animation.

Your file stays on this device

The tool above runs in a sealed frame that cannot send your file anywhere. It works with airplane mode on, and the counter above it stays at 0. Here is how you can check that yourself.
