What this removes
- GPS location and altitude
- Phone or camera model, lens and serial numbers
- Hidden preview pictures that can show the uncropped original
- Date and time taken, editing software, author names in documents
What it can’t remove
Anything visible in the photo itself: street signs, faces, reflections, documents on a desk. Look at the picture before you share it.
Warning: A cleaned photo of your front door still shows your front door.
A worked example
Maria shares a photo of her balcony. Before cleaning, the file holds her exact address to within 5 metres, her phone model and a hidden preview from before she cropped out her neighbour. After cleaning, the photo looks the same, but only the colour profile and orientation remain.
Questions
- Is my file sent anywhere?
- No. It is read and cleaned by your browser. The counter shows 0 network requests.
- Does cleaning reduce quality?
- No. Only the extra data is removed. The picture, sound or video is not re-compressed. HEIC and AVIF photos are the exception; they are saved as JPG, and the tool says so first.
- Why keep the colour profile?
- Without it, colours can look washed out on some screens.
- Do social apps remove this already?
- Some do, many don't, and messaging apps often send the original file.
Your file stays on this device
The tool above runs in a sealed frame that cannot send your file anywhere. It works with airplane mode on, and the counter above it stays at 0. Here is how you can check that yourself.
