View EXIF data

See the location, camera and dates stored in a photo before you share it.

What this shows

Add a photo and the tool lists what is stored in it before anything is changed: the GPS position and altitude, the make, model and serial number of the camera or phone, the lens, the exposure, the date and time taken, the software that last saved it, and whether a hidden thumbnail of the uncropped picture is still inside. Each item is marked by how much it gives away.

What it can’t show

What is in the picture itself. A number plate or a street sign is visible to anyone, metadata or not.

Then remove it

Everything the viewer lists can be taken out in the same step, without re-compressing the picture. The result is read again and shown, so you can see that the list is empty. For photos only, Remove EXIF data explains exactly what goes and what stays.

A worked example

A photo for a dating profile looks harmless. The viewer shows a GPS position in a residential street, a phone model and a time of 7:40 on a weekday morning. Cleaned, the same picture says none of it.

Questions

What will I see?
Everything the file carries beyond the picture, grouped by what it gives away: location, device, people, hidden pictures, time and editing history. A map link is shown for a GPS position, but no map loads until you click it.
Can I check a PDF or a Word document too?
Yes. The same tool reads documents, audio and video, and shows the author names, software and dates stored in them.
Is the photo uploaded to read it?
No. The file is read by your browser on your device. Online "EXIF viewers" that upload your photo have just been handed the very location you were checking for.

Your file stays on this device

The tool above runs in a sealed frame that cannot send your file anywhere. It works with airplane mode on, and the counter above it stays at 0. Here is how you can check that yourself.
