What this does
Decodes the WebP and writes it as a JPG at the quality you choose. Transparent areas are filled with white, because JPG has no transparency.
What it can’t do
Keep transparency or an animation. For a logo with a see-through background, convert to PNG instead.
A worked example
A listing site only accepts JPG, and the only copy of the photo is a WebP saved from another site. Converted here at quality 90, it uploads without complaint.
Questions
- JPG or PNG from a WebP?
- JPG for photos and anything that will be emailed or uploaded with a size limit. PNG if the picture has a transparent background or is a screenshot with a lot of text.
- Is quality lost?
- A little, because the picture is compressed again as a JPG. At quality 85 or above the difference is not visible. Choose PNG if you want none at all.
- Does the file get smaller?
- Not usually. WebP already compresses well, so a JPG of the same picture is often a bit larger. The point is compatibility, not size.
Your file stays on this device
The tool above runs in a sealed frame that cannot send your file anywhere. It works with airplane mode on, and the counter above it stays at 0. Here is how you can check that yourself.
