What this does
Decodes the PNG and writes it as a WebP, using your browser’s own encoder where it has one and a small built-in encoder otherwise. The quality slider sets how much detail to trade for size.
What it can’t do
Keep an APNG animation; the first frame is used. It also cannot make an already-blurry picture sharper.
A worked example
A page loads a 1.8 MB PNG illustration. As a WebP at quality 85 the same illustration is 190 KB, the transparent background still works, and the page loads noticeably faster on a phone.
Questions
- How much smaller will it be?
- A lossless WebP is typically 20 to 40 percent smaller than the PNG. A lossy WebP at quality 80 can be a tenth of the size, with a difference that is hard to see.
- Does WebP work everywhere?
- In every current browser and most image viewers. Some older desktop programs and a few upload forms still refuse it, so keep the PNG if you are not sure where the picture is going.
- Is transparency kept?
- Yes, in both lossless and lossy WebP.
Your file stays on this device
The tool above runs in a sealed frame that cannot send your file anywhere. It works with airplane mode on, and the counter above it stays at 0. Here is how you can check that yourself.
